Our only-ever Mach 2 fighter, the English Electric Lightning served us extremely well during the 60's, 70's and 80's, and was another great example of British expertise and ingenuity when it comes to aircraft design.

I remember seeing one take off, going vertical almost as soon as the wheels left the tarmac, the engines roaring with menace and the polished airframe glinting in the sun; gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
